Driving Assessments
1800 1DRIVE (1800 137 483)
There are several reasons why you may need to undertake a driving assessment. This could be after an accident or illness or at the request of Vicroads. Whatever the reason, Specialised Driver Training will help make the process as smooth as possible.
Driving Assessments are conducted by Vicroads-registered Occupational Therapy (OT) driving assessors. There are two parts to a driving assessment – an off-road and on-road component. The "off-road" will take place between you and your OT, while the on-road assessment is conducted in a dual-controlled vehicle with your occupational therapist and one of our driver trainers.
If you need assistance, we work with a large network of OTs, so can help you find one in your area.
Having to do a driving assessment can be an unsettling and challenging time. Driving is an important life skill that most of us take for granted, and we fear the loss of independence that not having a licence may bring.

Why an OT Driving Assessment is Essential
Occupational therapy (OT) driving assessments are critical in evaluating various aspects of an individual’s driving capabilities, especially when medical conditions or disabilities are involved. These assessments are tailored to:
Evaluate the impact of medical conditions
They determine how a person’s medical condition or disability might influence their driving ability.
Comprehensive ability assessment
OT driving assessments are thorough in assessing an individual’s physical and cognitive capacities related to driving.
Vehicle modification recommendations
Specific vehicle modifications may be recommended based on the assessment.
Support for new drivers with disabilities
The Vicroads driving assessment also aims to help individuals with acquired or congenital disabilities begin driving, ensuring they do so safely and confidently.
Ergonomic assessment for optimal driving
Driving assessments include an ergonomic evaluation to determine the most suitable driving posture to enhance overall driving performance.
Identifying alternative transport solutions
In cases where driving may not be feasible, the assessment helps identify alternative transportation options. This ensures that individuals continue to access the community and maintain their independence.
